Want a thrill? Come kayak the Wakamarina river rapids - undoubtedly one of the most scenic trips between Nelson and Havelock in your life! The Wakamarina is one of the richest gold rivers in the region. The first gold was found by four men in April 1864 and weighed 19 ounces - thats $38,000.00 worth today!
The gold rush started soon after. Local
rivers are still frequented by gold hunters, in search of that big gold
nugget. Gold can still be found along the banks and the perfect place to
start looking is in the Wakamarina Valley car park at Butchers flat.
We stop along the way in your kayak to visit a 60 m mine shaft that still remains from the gold rush days. It is now home to our native glowworms, providing them with enough darkness to be viewed in the middle of the day.
